De Málaga Fair (La Feria)
A Party you cannot miss! Every year, the Malagueños celebrate La Feria (fair) like you wouldn’t believe and that is why this party is known as the biggest street party in southern Europe. The feria is the celebration of the Christian conquest of Malaga on the 19th of August in 1487 over the Arabs who had ruled here for eight centuries.
The party is a ten-day long celebration that always coincides with the anniversary of August 19th. The official beginning of the feria starts with a concert on the Malagueta beach and an amazing fireworks fired from the port of Malaga at midnight. The next day, the city centre is an explosion of colour as the ‘Romeria’ begins- a gypsy procession with horse-drawn carriages and men on horseback- their senoritas sitting side-saddle behind them wearing their flambouyant flamenco dresses. The Malaguenos are also wearing their traditional costume. The Flamenco resonates in the streets and the dancers come alive.
All week long, you can enjoy typical local folk music and bands in the streets of the historical center and also in the park and on the plaza de la Marina, dance ‘Sevillanas’, taste the sweet Cartojal wine, refreshing tinto de verano and just enjoy the incredible party atmosphere in the historical center. You could also discover the traditional Corridas that have been perpetuated since the 19th century in the arenas of Malaga (plaza de toros) located between the port and the beaches.
At night, head out to the feria grounds to dance until dawn. It is THE party that you don´t want to miss!!
